True. Miss the days when my Pepsi had real sugar. Wish our nation had a real President. Bad for our health.
Cannabal - May 19, 2014, 4:37 pm,
The presidency is overrated, that's why it's gotten so bad.
EmmaRoydes - May 19, 2014, 5:57 pm,
it's good money though, much more than just beer money
Cannabal - May 19, 2014, 7:09 pm,
Oh, yeah, sure, if you start a war in the Middle East and happen to have ties to Halliburton, you're rolling in the godd'amn dough.
fauxnews - May 19, 2014, 8:16 pm,
What is it these days, mate? Last I checked they were charging the govt $100 a tray for mac and cheese in their cafeterias.
EmmaRoydes - May 19, 2014, 10:47 pm,
Did obama start a war in the middle east? He's now worth $12.5 million and his wife is worth an additional $11.2 million. $400,000 salary, $150,000 expense account, $100,000 travel account, and $20,000 entertainment account. Add in the book sales and

voila, entry to the 1 or 2%. He just closed on a $40 million estate in Hawaii last year as well.

It's too expensive nowadays do to regulations restricting trade. In the past people even imported tea are filtered out the sugar because it was cheaper that US sugar, but that was banned.

Corn is a heavily subsidized crop, that's why it became so cheap to grow, manufacture, and process for a number of products, one of them being this disgusting substance. But higher demand for real sugar is the key to lowering its overall price.
MMessEnnBeeCee - June 10, 2015, 11:04 am,
Wouldn't higher demand result in higher prices?
OTC - June 10, 2015, 12:19 pm,
I think he's talking about the higher demand_for sugar created a lower cost for HFCS as the alternative
MMessEnnBeeCee - June 10, 2015, 4:54 pm,
OK, that makes sense.
Cannabal - June 11, 2015, 11:28 am,
As I said, corn is a subsidized crop, which means that agribusiness has a greater incentive to grow it, and of course, HFCS became a cheap and inexpensive ingredient to produce, especially when it was not subject to tariffs.
MMessEnnBeeCee - June 11, 2015, 2:38 pm,
I guess the big question is why is it subsidized?
Cannabal - June 11, 2015, 8:24 pm,
In the 20th century, the U.S. started a policy of "go big or go home" farming that focused attention on crops like corn, which is a multifarious resource, but this led to its exploitation by agribusiness companies and thus why it floods the market today.

Wouldn't it be nice if our government decided one day that capitalism should be treated as capitalism. Let businesses live or die on their own without intervention from the government. Make a good product that has demand, you survive. Make a bad product
MMessEnnBeeCee - June 12, 2015, 10:12 am,
or one with no demand, business dies.
Cannabal - June 12, 2015, 2:06 pm,
But, but, but then those poor investment banks would've had to default on all the bad loans, mortgages, and securities they bet on for the sake of profit. Have you no heart, sir?
MMessEnnBeeCee - June 12, 2015, 2:39 pm,
apparently not.
